Man arrested in violent 1993 Charles County rape; deputies worry there could be more victims

WALDORF, Md. (FOX 5 DC) - A man who has lived in several states throughout the country has been arrested in a violent 1993 rape case in Charles County thanks to DNA evidence and detectives said they believe he could have more victims.

The Charles County Sheriff's Office said 51-year-old Vincent Jones was taken into custody in Tennessee and has been extradited to Maryland.

Investigators allege that Jones broke into a woman's home in the 1100 block of Heritage Place in Waldorf on Aug. 20, 1993, and sexually assaulted her for several hours at knifepoint.

Detectives said Jones did not know the victim and the two had never met. Jones, who was 25 at the time, stole the victim's car, which was recovered in North Carolina a few days later, according to officials.

Authorities said a DNA profile was developed from evidence recovered from the victim's vehicle and home, but investigators weren't able to link it to Jones until 2016.

Jones was arrested in September and charged with rape, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and other charges.

Investigators said they were looking into the possibility that Jones may have sexually assaulted other people.

Jones was born and raised in Maryland and moved frequently, according to officials. Detectives said he lived on Gittings Court in Waldorf and attended Thomas Stone High School, though it doesn't appear he graduated from there.

When Jones was arrested in September, he was working as a private contractor for a satellite TV company as an installer, according to officials. He has previously worked in construction and listed his occupation as a carpenter, authorities stated.

Detectives said he also worked for a custom cabinet maker.
