Friends and family hold candlelight vigil for 10-year-old Makiyah Wilson
WASHINGTON - In the pouring rain, family, friends and community members gather in a Northeast DC neighborhood to remember a sprightly 10-year-old girl who was gunned down Monday night.
Makiyah Wilson is remembered as energetic and loving. She liked video games, sports, and playing with her siblings.
The four suspects who opened fire remain on the loose, as her family and friends grieve for the loss of the young girl, who brought so much joy to those who knew her.
Donations continue to pour in to support Makiyah's family. The GoFundMe page, created by Makiyah's mother, Donnetta Wilson, has now surpassed the original $10,000 goal -- reaching almost $15,000 Saturday night.
Donetta Wilson is heartbroken.
"This happened to my baby," said Makiyah's mother. "This just hurt me so bad. It hurt me because my baby can't live and see her life. She wanted to do stuff. She wanted to do some stuff," she told FOX 5 on Wednesday.
A memorial for the young girl continues to grow outside of her home. However, the bullet holes from the shooting can still be seen on the door and window of their apartment.
A funeral for the 10-year-old girl is due to be held on Wednesday.
