Governor Hogan: E-ZPass transponders free for Maryland drivers

The $7.50 fee for E-ZPass Maryland transponders is being waived and the automated toll devices will now be free for new customers following an announcement from Governor Larry Hogan on Wednesday.

The changes come as Marylanders make plans for Memorial Day Weekend, and as prices continue to soar at the gas pump.

Hogan says it will save Maryland residents about $46 million over the next five years.

Customers who use an E-ZPass will save 25 percent or more on Maryland tolls. For E-ZPass users, the cost of the Bay Bridge is $2.50 and $4 for cash payments.

"We continue moving forward with a commitment to provide relief for Maryland taxpayers by putting an additional $46 million back into the pockets of hard-working middle-class families, retirees, and small businesses - and back into our growing economy," said Hogan.

Hogan rolled back previous Bay Bridge toll costs in 2015, from $6 to $4 for cash users.

The Maryland Transportation Authority also says it will replace nearly 400,000 old transponders that are now in circulation at no cost to customers.

MDTA says additionally, anyone who bought a transponder in 2018 will be issued a credit of $7.50 as long as the account is registered and in good standing. Anyone who bought an E-ZPass transponder this calendar year will see the $7.50 credit on their accounts in the next several weeks.

Two years ago, the Republican governor announced a toll rollback that eliminated the $1.50 monthly E-ZPass account maintenance fee.

More information about E-ZPass and locations to purchase a transponder can be found online.

MDTA says recommended Bay Bridge drive times for Memorial Day weekend include: Thursday/Friday before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m., Saturday before 7 a.m. and after 5 p.m. and Sunday/Monday before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m.
