DC braces for Unite the Right demonstrations

WASHINGTON - The stage is set for this weekend's Unite the Right rally, which comes on the one-year anniversary of the deadly gathering in Charlottesville.

With many counter-protests expected, authorities across the region are gearing up to make sure the city remains safe.

"If you're going to come down and attend the events at Lafayette Park we expect them to be peaceful," said U.S. Park Police Chief Robert MacLean. "We will not tolerate violence of any type. We will not tolerate any incitement or any type of disobedience that would involve injury or harassment to the folks up there in Lafayette Park."

"National Parks, as federal land, provides the opportunity for all Americans to exercise their First Amendment rights of assembly and free speech," National Park Service spokesman Mike Litterst told FOX 5 on Thursday. He said the department has a long history of organizing events and expects this weekend's rally to go off without any incident.

On Thursday, Mayor Muriel Bowser, D.C. Chief of Police Peter Newsham and other officials met to outline their plans.

"This weekend, and every day going forward, we will ensure that the world knows that no matter how much attention these people demand, that they will never represent the values of our city or our nation," Bowser said in a statement. "We have a number of techniques to keep them separate," Newsham said. "We're accustomed to protests in Washington and the rules are pretty simple: don't hurt anyone and don't break anything."
