DC police seize caiman, dogs from home

WASHINGTON - Authorities seized a caiman and a dozen dogs believed to be used in dog fights from a home in the District, according to officials.

D.C. police said they were serving a search warrant Wednesday evening with the DC Humane Rescue Alliance in the 3500 block of Brothers Place, SE, when they found the 5-foot-long caiman.

The reptile, which police said was between 4 and 5 years old, was found in the basement of the home inside a plastic container in inhumane conditions.

Authorities seized the animal and the DC Humane Rescue Alliance is working to relocate the animal to a safe habitat, according to officials.

Police returned to the home on Thursday and said they found 12 dogs, six adults and six puppies, living in unsanitary conditions and suffering from chronic neglect. The dogs showed signs and scars consistent with dog fighting, according to officials. All the dogs were taken to a vet for care.

Police remind residents that it is illegal to keep a caiman or alligator as a house pet in the District.
