$45K reward offered in murder of 10-year-old Makiyah Wilson, DC police announce

WASHINGTON - The reward for information in the shooting death of a 10-year-old girl in the District has been increased to $45,000, officials announced on Monday.

DC Police Chief Peter Newsham spoke alongside Mayor Muriel Bowser as they addressed the murder of Makiyah Wilson, who was gunned down on July 16 when four gunmen pulled up into her Northeast neighborhood and opened fire on a group of people. Several others were also injured in the shooting.

According to officials, $20,000 of the reward money is from FBI, but they are not involved in the investigation at this time.

Newsham stressed to the public his department's request for assistance in their investigation, but also thanked those who had already submitted tips.

"I think the investigation is progressing in a very positive way," Newsham said. "We are going to do everything that's in our power to find those people and hold them accountable."

Authorities said they're still looking for the four suspects and sources told FOX 5 as many as 70 rounds were fired during the shooting. Detectives found the suspects' vehicle, a black four-door Infiniti sedan, in Prince George's County two days after shooting. Officials said the Prince George's County Police Department was aiding the Metropolitan Police Department's investigation.

Investigators obtained footage from two cameras -- one of the shooting and another of the car as it drove away. In a video released by DC police, three gunmen are seen firing in all directions in the courtyard, while one man appears to run toward the front door of Makiyah's home.

"These cowards need to be held accountable for their actions because when you sign up for the streets, this is what happens - they come with certain rules and guidelines," said Makiyah's uncle Mike D'Angelo.

D'Angelo is beginning a 130-mile walk from DC to Philadelphia in honor of Makiyah, as well as another loved one who was shot and killed in Philly days before her.

Police have yet to release a motive or make any arrests in connection with Makiyah's death and hope the $45,000 reward will lead to details to bring her killers to justice.
