DC area chefs travel to Puerto Rico to cook for Hurricane Maria victims
WASHINGTON - Chefs in Washington D.C. are joining forces as they head to Puerto Rico to feed Hurricane Maria's victims and they're asking for your help.
Headed by Republic's own Chef Samuel "Sammy" Diaz, a merry band of local Puerto Rican chefs are putting their gifts to work and flying to the island's aid. They call themselves Chefs de Borinquen aka Chefs of Puerto Rico.
In 1998 Hurricane George, a Category 3 hurricane, struck Puerto Rico and forced Diaz's family to relocate to New York. His own experience is what motivated Diaz to start this mission.
The Chefs of Borinquen -- whose airfare has been sponsored through the DC organization Friends of Puerto Rico -- will be traveling to the island on November 12. In the four days they'll be there, they plan on cooking for people in Juana Diaz, San Lorenzo, and Humacao.
While most of their expenses are coming out of pocket, you can help the chefs by making a donation to their GoFundMe page. The money will go towards purchasing food, paying for extra luggage to take food donations, and supplies.
