DC-area bars and restaurants offering discounts to federal workers during shutdown
WASHINGTON - As thousands of federal employees are furloughed or are working without pay due to a partial government shutdown this holiday, several areas businesses are offering discounts to federal employees.
You may need to present your government ID in order to qualify for the discount.
Jose Andres DC-area restaurants
Jose Andres, who owns restaurants in Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and other places across the U.S., has reached out on Twitter saying that his D.C. locations will be providing a free sandwich for lunch to federal workers impacted by the partial shutdown.
His D.C.-area restaurants include America Eat Tavern, Barmini, Beefsteak, China Chilcano, Minibar, Oyamel and Jaleo.
Capitol Lounge
Beginning at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, The Capitol Lounge has been offering a variety of drink specials to federal employees for $5 (with government employee ID).
The drinks have lots of clever names and will be available every day of the week during the shutdown. The drinks include "Nothing Realy Mattis," "Mexico Will Pay For This," and "Stephen Miller's Hair Affair."
The Queen Vic
A little toast from British pub The Queen Vic is offering federal employees with a valid ID an 18% discount. Fed. workers just need to show their ID to their bartender for the discount.
Z-Burger
Z-Burger will be giving away free burgers for government employees on Monday, December 24 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at their Tenleytown location. Employees can pick a hamburger, cheeseburger, veggie burger or turkey burger with valid government ID.
City Tap at Penn Quarter
City Tap at Penn Quarter is running extended happy hour deals from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. during the shutdown. They're offering $5 drafts and $6 wines, as well as a $7 beer and shot combo.
The Brighton D.C.
Wharf pub The Brighton is giving government employees with valid ID 10 percent off of their meal through the shutdown.
National Building Museum
The Washington Post reports the National Building Museum is offering free admission for anyone with a government ID.
Newseum
Tickets purchased online to the Newseum are 15 percent off during the shutdown, according to The Washington Post.
Artechouse
Use the code dcisopen to get 20 peroff of tickets to experiential art museum Artechouse.
Additionally, Chase Bank announced they will automatically waive or refund overdraft and monthly service fees on Chase checking and savings accounts if an employee's salary from an affected federal agency was direct-deposited into the account in November, 2018.
Chase will waive or refund the affected fees from December 24 through January 4 or until the shutdown ends - whichever is sooner.
Carmine's
Carmine's is offering federal workers what they are calling a bittersweet beverage - the "Hard Times Cocktail" - for $6. The cocktail consists of 1/4 oz Compari, 2 oz Early times bourbon and 1 oz Orange Juice. In addition, their Happy Hour menu will be available all day while the shutdown is going on, and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. every day, an order of meatball sliders will be free to anyone who shows their government ID.
