Clarksburg High School student charged with possession of gun at school to be held without bond

CLARKSBURG, Md. - Montgomery County police say a number of schools in the county received threats on Friday - some of them coming on social media. They all come one day after an 18-year-old student was accused for bringing a gun and knife to Clarksburg High School.

Alwin Chen was arrested Thursday and will remain in custody until his bond review hearing on Tuesday.

Parents and students at Clarksburg are shaken over Chen's arrest. School officials made two announcements, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, to students on Friday about a gun being brought to the school. Students were also reminded that if they see something, say something.

Chen was arrested after he was pulled out of class after the school received a report that a student was in possession of a weapon. Chen told police that he had a gun in his backpack and a knife in his shirt pocket.

Two of Chen's teammates on the cross country team said they do not believe he was looking to hurt anyone and they have no idea where Chen would have obtained a gun. They also said he is shy, quiet and had been picked on in the past.

"He grew up around this area. He got bullied throughout elementary school and middle school and it has gotten better in high school, but still nowadays, he still got picked on every now and then," said one teammate.

Clarksburg High School principal Edward Owusu spoke out on Friday and referred to the incident as a mistake.

"There was nothing to alert us to any kind of issues at all and he was a good student," said Owusu. "He made a mistake as kids do. He made a mistake as adults do."

FOX 5 has also learned that Chen went to Seneca Valley High School in Germantown at some time on Thursday.

More information about the investigation into the incident is expected to be released at a court hearing on Tuesday.
