Car used in shooting death of 10-year-old girl in DC located in Prince George's County, police say
WASHINGTON - Officials have now located the car suspected in the murder of 10-year-old Makiyah Wilson. The four suspects believed to be involved her death remain at large.
The car, identified as a black 4-door Infiniti sedan, with its rear bumper missing was found at around 7 a.m. on Brooks Drive in Suitland/District Heights area of Prince George's County.
Police still continue their search for the four masked suspects who opened fire in the 300 block of 53rd Street at 8 p.m. Monday night, taking the girl's life and injuring four others.
According to two law enforcement sources, as many as 50 to 70 shots were fired during the shooting. Three men were shot, one of whom was flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore where he is reported to be in critical condition.
The woman shot was Makiyah's 18-year-old sister. She was arrested on a parole violation in Virginia and appeared in court on Wednesday, with a visible bandage on her right arm from the shooting.
Police obtained footage from two cameras -- one of the shooting, and another of the car as it drove away. They were able to identify the make and model of the car.
A surveillance video released by police on Tuesday shows three of the suspects appearing to wear all-black clothing and the fourth suspect in a white hoodie.
The victims were congregating in a courtyard area of the street when the gunmen came through and opened fire. Ten-year-old Makiyah was reportedly sitting in front of her house.
In the video released by DC police, three gunmen are seen firing in all directions in the courtyard, while one man appears to run toward the front door of Makiyah's home.
"It sounded like a western movie, World War III or something," said one resident. "It was bad and the next thing you know, everybody just started running and crying."
A law enforcement source tells FOX 5 Makiyah was shot in the chest. Officers began CPR before she was rushed to Children's National Medical Center where the rising fifth-grade student was pronounced dead. She had recently celebrated her birthday.
A memorial now grows with balloons, flowers and teddy bears outside of her front door. Bullet holes are present in the door and front window.
"She was extremely affectionate, she was very vibrant, excited," said teacher LeAngelo Emperator. "I know we were trying to recruit her for our girls' basketball team for fifth grade, so she was looking forward to that happening next year."
On Wednesday, police went door-to-door in the Clay Terrace neighborhood handing out flyers. Police are offering a $25,000 reward for information that they hope will lead to the arrest of the suspects.
"Cowards showed up on our streets in D.C. and used illegal firearms to murder a young, precious little girl," said D.C. Police Assistant Chief Chanel Dickerson.
Investigators have not identified a motive.
"These cowards need to be held accountable for their actions because when you sign up for the streets, you feel what I'm saying, it comes with certain rules and guidelines. Learn the rules and guidelines of the streets, if you get out here you see kids, you see parents, you see mothers out here --buck or turn and come back if that's what you've got in your heart to do," said Makiyah's uncle, Mike D'Angelo.
"Her mother is speechless. It is so hard for her," said D'Angelo. "She is getting so many messages and so much love, but at the end of the day she feels like it is her fault and I just want to tell her it's not her fault. She says she tried, and she feels like she failed her daughter," he said.
A GoFundMe page has been created to support Makiyah's family as they deal with their loss.
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting or the suspects to call them at (202) 727-9099.
