Body found inside burning vehicle in Southeast DC identified as 23-year-old Hyattsville woman
WASHINGTON - A Maryland woman has been identified as the victim found dead inside a car engulfed in flames in Southeast D.C. last week.
Police say officers found the vehicle on fire in the 800 block of Adrian Place at around 7:21 p.m. Thursday after responding to a report of a shooting in the area.
After the fire was put out, authorities found 23-year-old Kerrice Lewis inside the car unresponsive suffering from several gunshot wounds, according to police. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The vehicle that Lewis was found in appeared to be a late-model Lexus. A police source tells FOX 5's Lindsay Watts that Lewis was trying to get out of the trunk as the vehicle burned.
Lewis resided in Hyattsville, Maryland, and friends say she went by the nickname "Kay Kay."
A woman who was visiting family in the neighborhood told FOX 5 last Thursday that she heard several gunshots and then a big explosion before witnessing the car on fire.
