Police say ‘person of interest' in Georgetown attempted kidnapping is in custody

WASHINGTON (FOX 5 DC) - D.C. police say a "person of interest" who was linked to an attempted kidnapping of a 6-year-old girl in a Georgetown convenience store is in custody.

On Tuesday, police released a surveillance image of the woman - who has not been identified - in Scheele's Market.

A neighbor talked to FOX 5 on Wednesday.

As police were investigating, the neighbor said she saw a woman who fit the suspect's description in a park and that she was twirling around a poll and wasn't dressed for the weather. The neighbor added that she "didn't seem well."

After seeing news reports, the neighbor called police on Wednesday and was told they had someone in custody.

When she called police to report it, they told her she was in custody.

Police have not identified the person, nor have they indicated what she might be charged with.

D.C. police say the suspect encountered a 6-year-old girl who had been dropped off by her carpool driver in front of her home. Police say the woman approached her and grabbed her by the arm.

Police say the woman said, "Come to my house, I have cotton candy," to the female victim while pulling her away.

The victim told officers she was able to break free and ran into her home where police were called. Investigators say the woman fled the area on foot toward Rose Park.
