7-year-old Charles Co. girl struck by truck after getting off school bus still in critical condition

A 7-year-old Charles County girl remains in critical, but stable condition after she was struck by a pickup truck as she was getting off a school bus, officials say.

The girl, identified by a family friend and housemate as Skyla Shirriel, was crossing the street in front of the school bus that had activated its lights and flashing stop sign when she was hit by a Ford F-250 driven by a 35-year-old woman, according to the Charles County Sheriff's Office.

The incident happened at around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Oliver Shop Road near Trotter Road in Bryantown.

Shirriel was flown to the hospital with critical injuries. According to the family friend, the young girl was placed in a medically-induced coma on Tuesday night.

The driver of the Ford truck remained at the scene, officials say.

Charles County Public Schools says the bus was dropping off students from T.C. Martin Elementary School.

The Charles County Sheriff's Office's Traffic Operations Unit is investigating the collision. Officials say charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
