Man dead, business owner injured in DC workplace shooting

WASHINGTON (FOX 5 DC) - A masked gunman opened fire inside of a day labor business in Northeast, D.C. Thursday morning killing one man and injuring the owner.

D.C Police Chief Peter Newsham spoke to reporters following the shooting and said it happened just before 6 a.m. inside of the Trojan Labor office on the 1700 block of Hamlin Street.

Newsham said a gunman walked into the building and opened fired on the two men who were in the office area. He said both men were shot multiple times. The owner remains hospitalized at this time while the second man was killed. He said the business was open at the time of the shooting and other people were inside.

Police later identified the man who was killed as 32-year-old David Anthony Remen, of La Crosse, WI.

Newsham said it does not appear robbery was the motive in the shooting. He said the suspect in the case is described as a male between 20 and 30 years old, around 5-feet-10-inches tall and approximately 140 pounds. Newsham said he had on a multi-colored hat and was wearing a mask and gloves.

Newsham said the suspect fled on foot heading westbound on Hamlin Street. He said officers are investigating to see if the shooting was captured on surveillance video.

At this time, Newsham said they do not know the suspect's relationship to the business nor do they have a motive. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

Trojan Labor's website states that it's a for-profit business under a company named Hire Quests that is based out of Goose Creek, South Carolina.
