DC's famous cherry blossoms reach peak bloom
WASHINGTON - D.C.'s famous cherry blossoms have reached peak bloom.
The peak bloom dates, which occur when 70 percent of the trees are in bloom, began Thursday. The trees are expected to remain in peak bloom until April 8.
The original peak bloom dates were scheduled for between March 17 and March 20 but cold weather caused them to be pushed back.
The average peak bloom is April 4. In 2017, peak bloom was on March 25. This year's National Cherry Blossom Festival runs from March 20 to April 15.
NPS officials warn to keep a look out for gusty winds which can be an "enemy" of the blossoms.
