140-year-old DC synagogue to move for 2nd time

WASHINGTON - (AP) -- The oldest synagogue building in Washington is moving to a new address -- for the second time.

A company that moves buildings will begin the relocation of the Adas Israel Synagogue on Thursday. The building dates to 1876 and is now home to the Lillian and Albert Small Jewish Museum.

The synagogue being moved from the intersection of 3rd and G Streets, Northwest, to a temporary location, to make room for a massive redevelopment project at the entrance to the Interstate 395 tunnel. Ultimately, it will be moved again to 3rd and F Streets, Northwest.

The synagogue was moved previously in 1969 to make room for the Metro transit agency's downtown headquarters.
